About Us

How did our company begin?
Actually, it was quite by accident (or was it?). The name of our parent company, R & U Publications, was selected long before I knew what the scope and purpose of the company would be. In the process of developing skills and finding hidden talents, it became the creative outlet I had been seeking for quite some time. Armed with traditional darkroom and computer skills, the movement to the digital darkroom was (and is) very exciting. Developing a means of selling my products on the Internet was the next logical step, leading to the creation of this website.

How did we arrive at the name “Lemon Drop Designs”?
For several reasons, “Over the Rainbow” is one of my favorite songs. A section in the song that speaks to me in particular is “Someday I’ll wish upon a star, and wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that’s where you’ll find me.” I’ve traveled through some troubled times, but along the way, I’ve learned that gorgeous rainbows can come after a storm and unexpected blessings can come on the heel of difficult times.

What is it about combining photographs and text that appeals to me?
I would have to say it is because I love both the beauty of nature and the impact of the written word. I’ve been known to chase butterflies and deer for a good photo and can spend hours reading or writing inspirational text. Combining the two is a little like putting a melody and lyrics together when writing a song. I was a songwriter long before I was a photographer, though I can hear my siblings laughing as they read this passage. (While my brother can sing several songs I wrote when I was in grade school by heart, and in their entirety, let’s just say they were never destined to be heard beyond the confines of the family).

How do the two elements come together?
Sometimes the photograph leads me to a sentiment, and, on other occasions, the text leads the way. I try to use a conversational tone in my greeting cards, putting heartfelt messages into words to be expressed by one person to another. I don’t create the greeting cards and other items for myself nor for the person who might be sending them. The person I have in mind when I create a card is the individual who will receive it.
